The Responsibilities of a Permanent Resident

Obtaining a Permanent Residency (PR) card within Canada will open up a wealth of opportunities for the future. However, possessing such documentation also requires a certain amount of responsibility.

It is important that any applicant appreciates how this card will impact their status here and more importantly, when they are required to present this card. Let us briefly address both of these issues.

Travel Stipulations

It is essential that this card is present whenever an individual travels. This applies when flying to Canada as well as when entering into the country via other means. These will include (but might not be limited to) trains, buses, boats, or similar. Those who do not provide evidence of this card may be denied entry completely.

Losing Permanent Status

There are several ways that one could possibly lose their status as a permanent resident. For one, a card holder may lose their status when they fail to reside within Canada for two years, or if they have been convicted of a serious crime. Most of the time, though, losing your permanent resident status is a result of being a full Canadian citizen.

Those who may be worried about travelling abroad for an extended period of time can always apply for further documentation as may be required. Security is always an issue and these are a few means to mitigate such concerns.
